A Glance at the Dachshund Breed

Dachshund is an interesting breed, at least physically. The long body and short legs have raised question marks among new and veteran pet owners alike. However if you consider their original job you will see that it’s the perfect body type. Dachshunds were originally underground hunting dogs. They were supposed to follow small animals inside their underground lairs where hunters couldn’t go. You can imagine a sausage-like body is perfectly fit to squeeze into narrow dens.

Dachshunds are small dogs and there are three different types available. The main difference between them is the coat style: short, long or wiry. And each type of Dachshund can come in three different sizes. They come in various colors such as black and tan, even tri-colors are possible.

Nowadays they aren’t used for hunting as much and have taken on a new job, the life of a pet. Though they’re not the best choice for a first dog. They tend to be quite stubborn and are hard to train, but more on that later. If you ask any Dachshund owner he will tell you he wouldn’t trade him for anything in the world.

This goes to show just how well they bond in the right conditions. They are very affectionate and caring, however show a few problematic behaviors that the owner needs to take care of.

Dachshund training

One of the most pesky activities involving Dachshunds is training. The dog is headstrong and independent and he doesn’t like to be told what to do. They are a difficult breed regarding training habits and most new dog owners don’t know how to handle the problem.

Most often the reason they are stubborn is a faulty attitude from the owner. Like all types of dogs they need a confident, inspiring pack leader. If you fail to provide that the dog will either try to be a leader himself or will disregard the hierarchy altogether.

Either way this means he won’t listen to you. It can go even worse. He will start guarding furniture and won’t let you get to your clothes and whatnot. They will snap at children and can have unpredictable behavior towards everybody. However problematic they may seem to the casual dog owner if you know how to control them you’ll see that Dachshunds are really wonderful.

Be a good packleader

All you have to do is be a good packleader. In order to be a good leader for your dog all you need to do is set strict rules. As long as you show them what they can or can’t do they will strive to please you. If they feel like they belong to the family they behave the part.

The minute you do something he wants that he shouldn’t have things will take a turn for the worst. You must understand that Dachshunds are needy dogs and must be provided with sufficient control and attention to avoid psychological deviations.

Proper attitude and leadership will go a long way not just with Dachshunds, but with any dog breed. Then all you need is a daily walk and the foundation for a healthy, happy relationship is all set.
