Puppy Chewing Everything? – What Every Owner Needs To Know

You have no idea how many people think it is amusing to watch their new, cute little puppy chewing everything it can get it’s teeth around. I can almost hear your mind saying, “why don’t the owners teach this dog how to behave!”.

Little do the proud owners know the behavioral problems they are storing up for the future. If only they were to address this trait at an early age. They could easily do something to reduce and control their puppies chewing habit.

The fact of the matter is that just like babies, puppies like to explore their surroundings. And one of the ways they try to discover more about what is around them, is by chewing.

Your dog can’t know they are doing wrong when it chews your $100 shoes, or sucks the edges of that expensive rug you got given for Christmas last year. All they are doing is what comes natural to them.

How To Stop Your Puppy Chewing

Doubtless, when your dog starts to chew your expensive carpet, you will want to be angry with them – don’t! Needless to say, getting angry with your pet is pointless, and can lead to your dog becoming nervous and anti-social.

Simply teach your dog a short command like “No!”, “Leave!”, or “Stop!”.

Which ever command you choose, make sure you and other family members always use the same one. You don’t want to confuse your dog by giving them mixed messages.

Occasionally, particularly at first, it may take more than a simple command to stop your pets chewing habit. In these circumstances, you may need to reinforce your command by encouraging your dog to chew on something that is acceptable.

When your puppy chews something it shouldn’t, give your command to make the dog stop and then get it to chew on a favorite toy instead. Repeat this every time your dog chews, and over time, this repetitive training will teach them that chewing is only acceptable on their own toys.

A new puppy chewing everything in sight is showing anti-social behavior. You have to be pro-active and eliminate this type of behavior quickly. Provided you are consistent with your training, do not get angry with your dog if they don’t get it right all the time, and don’t give up on your training when things get tough, you will soon be able to bring even the toughest of dogs into line. Hopefully, before they completely wreck your home.
